Student visa

In order to study in the USA you need a student visa. If you’ve enrolled in some of the vocational training programs or other non-academic studies you need a student (M) visa. For academic programs (Bachelor or postgraduate studies as well as English language course) you need to apply for Student (F) visa.

Conditions of student visa

The conditions to be met for a student visa are:

  • Form I-20 which is issued by school after the enrollment at some of the study programs in the USA (Student and Exchange Visitor Program – SEVP)
  • Certificate of registration in SEVIS system (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) ie. proof of payment of the I-901 fee
  • Filled out and approved DS-160 form – online request for non-immigrant visas (online through embassy website)
  • A proof that you intent to stay temporarily in the USA – until you finish your studies
  • A certificate that you have not been persecuted
  • A proof that you have enough financial resources for tuition fee and living expenses for at least a year of studying in the USA
  • You need to have health insurance

Benefits of student visa

Student (F and M) visas allow you to study in the USA and bring your partner as well as children, who have the right to attend school in the USA. Student visa allows you to work part time jobs (up to 20 hours a week) on the campus during your semester and full time while on holidays. Under certain conditions after a year of your studies you can ask for a permission to work part time off campus.

You can extend your student visa if you wish to continue your education, you can also apply for Practical Training visa (during or after studies) which could bring you valuable work experience in this country.

Duration of student visa

Student visa can be issued on duration of your study program. You can enter the USA maximum 30 days before starting date of your program and stay up to 60 days after completion of program.

Application for student visa

You can apply for a student visa at US embassy in your country. One of the steps in the process is interview in consular section.

Visa fees and processing time

Visa fee for student visa application is 160USD and processing time depends on the case. The waiting period is the time until your interview is scheduled. In certain cases, after the interview the officer could require additional processing that could last up to 6 months.
