Student visa for Germany is not required for student coming from member states of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland, however students coming from third countries who wish to study longer than 3 months must obtain student visa. In addition, students from third countries must apply for residence permit upon arrival to Germany.

International students in Germany are allowed to work 20 hours per week if they come from EU/EEA and Switzerland, while third countries’ nationals can work 120 days full time or 240 days part time.

Student visa application is submitted in the German diplomatic mission in student’s home country, while residence permit application is submitted at local foreigner office upon arrival to Germany.
Visa application fee is 75 EUR. The average processing time is from 1 to 3 months, but getting an appointment in embassy could last around month or longer.
