Student visa is not necessary for students coming from member states of the European Union and European Economic Area. Students coming from third countries who wish to study in Switzerland longer than 3 months must have national visa. All international students who plan to study longer than 3 months must apply for residence permit upon arrival in Switzerland.

In addition it enables studies in many different European languages. International students in Switzerland are allowed to work 15 hours per week during semesters and full time during study breaks. Students coming from third countries can start working after 6 months of studies and once they obtain work permit.
Student visa is issued on a period up to a year, student visa will be replaced with residence permit issued on a period of studies or one year with possibility of renewal.
Application for student visa is submitted at the Swiss diplomatic mission in student’s home country, while residence permit application is submitted in the cantonal foreigner office no later than 14 days upon arrival.
Visa application fee is 80 EUR. The average processing time is between 8 and 10 weeks.
