Student visa is not necessary for students coming from member states of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland, while students from third countries need student visa if they plan to study longer than 3 months. All international students must apply for residence permit upon arrival to Italy.

Applying for student visa

Application for national visa D is being submitted in the Italian diplomatic mission in home country, while residence permit application is being submitted no later than 8 days upon arrival in the local police station or post office.

Visa application fee is 50 EUR. The average processing time is up to 3 weeks, however the procedure of obtaining an appointment at the embassy can last up to 2 months.
